First Human To Human Case Of Swine Flu In UK
The first person to have contracted Swine Flu (H1N1) has been speaking to Sky News this morning and confirming that he is now on the mend. The man told the reporter “I feel much better today after getting Tamiflu last night. Earlier in the week I felt really bad and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.” He also spoke about how worried he was of contracting pneumonia now he was starting to get better after being informed that this could happen to him.
His wife and son have been treated with Tamiflu but are showing no signs of having contracted Swine Flu. They are in isolation at their home and awaiting supplies to be delivered to them.
Most worrying was his comments on how he contracted Swine Flu from a colleague after spending a few minutes in her office. There didn’t seem to be any physical contact between the two indicating that the virus is airborne. It was confirmed that the women who passed the virus to him HAD been in Mexico and had a cough but had been told that she DID NOT have swine flu.
It was put down to the fact that she had already been given Tamiflu and it had worked.
In another interview with a doctor on Sky News, a question was asked by a viewer about being able to carry the virus without showing any signs. The doctor confirmed that you could carry the virus and actively pass it on without showing any signs of having the virus. The doctor went on to confirm that you would test POSITIVE for H1N1 Swine Flu if this was the case.
The reporter asked the doctor if this was why the woman who passed the virus to him had tested NEGATIVE for swine flu. The doctor responded by saying that unless the woman had tested positive for swine flu, even without showing symptoms herself, there was no way that she would have been the person to pass it on – he went on to ask how the man knew that it was his colleague that had passed it to him. Hopefully, it’s because she was the only person to have been near him and who had recently returned from Mexico. If this is not the case, this would be cause for concern that the virus is already widespread around the UK.
You can listen to a full audio interview of the man confirmed to have contracted Swine Flu, the H1N1 influenza virus on the BBC.
There are now thought to be a 18 confirmed cases of Swine Flu in the UK. Two London school children are the latest confirmations.
